"재개발지역에서" 존 포일 John Foyle
2004년에 한국에 왔다. 그리고 그림을 그리기 시작했다.
나에게 드로잉은 세계를 바라보고 인식해 가는 하나의 방법이다.
또한 그것은 우리가 자연과 관계하는 하나의 활동이기도 하다.
화가 마티스는, “드로잉은 정신을 표현하고, 페인팅은 감각을 표현한다.”고 말한 바 있다.
그렇지만 아쉽게도 서양에서는 드로잉의 전통이 파괴되었다.
전통이 언제나 복고를 의미하는 것만은 아니다.
때로는 앞으로 나아가기 위한 유일한 토대가 되기도 한다.
Mass는 나의 작은 드로잉들에 알맞은 공간이다.
하지만 나는 두 개의 큰 드로잉과 작은 페인팅들도 포함시켰다.
대부분의 작품들은 도시의 ‘재개발지역’이라 알려진 곳에서 작업한 것이다.
내게 오직 이들 지역에만 공동체가 살아있음을 알게 한다.
이곳에 거주하는 어떤 노인들은 버려진 판지를 모아 돈을 벌기도 한다.
그래서 나도 판지를 모았다. 그리고 드로잉들의 바탕으로 사용하였다.
작업을 통해서야 비로소 나는 한국을 깨닫기 시작했다.
내가 작업을 멈출 수 없는 것은 그 때문이다.
I arrived in Korea in 2004 and started to draw.
Drawing is a way of seeing and knowing the world.
It is an activity that connects us to nature.
Matisse said that drawing represents the spirit, and painting represents the senses.
But the tradition of drawing has been destroyed in the West.
Tradition does not always mean going backwards.
Sometimes it provides the only basis for moving forward.
The Mass gallery seems suitable for my small drawings.
But I also include two large drawings, and a few small paintings.
Most of this work was made in urban areas known as jegebaljiok(designated for redevelopment).
What I understand as ‘community’ survives only in these areas.
Some elderly residents earn money by gathering discarded cardboard.
So I have also gathered cardboard, and I use it to mount my drawings.
Through my work, I begin to know Korea; that is how I hope to preserve it.
